A Study of Family Literacy in New Brunswick: Work, Outcomes, and Best Practices
This document outlines current work, outcomes, and best practices in community-based family literacy programs in New Brunswick. This report is a benchmark study of how family literacy in New Brunswick has been cultivated up to and including the year 2005.
The scope and nature of attrition encountered in adult literacy programs was explored in context of the Minto Community Academic Services Program (CASP), a New Brunswick community-based program offering academic and intermediate adult upgrading services.
This report builds on the document, Best Practices for Adult Literacy, which investigated best practices for facilitating the development literacy among adults.
This document contains the stories of 25 adults in New Brunswick who, despite encountering many barriers, succeeded in improving their literacy skills. Some of the stories were written entirely by the learners, while others were collected through face-to-face or telephone interviews and transcribed for print.
This document has been created by Joan Perry, an adult literacy facilitator from New Brunswick. She has used this material successfully with adult learners and would like to share it with other literacy practitioners.
