Work Ability: Literacy and Essential Skills in the Workplace (2013)

This magazine is part of a campaign by the PEI Literacy Alliance to promote improving the essential skills of workers in Prince Edward Island.

It includes articles on the link between literacy and health and safety in the workplace; how a Charlottetown hotel is building a culture of learning in its workplace; myths and facts about literacy and essential skills (LES); and a who’s who of players in the province’s LES community.

Talking Health With Seniors [Video - 16:25] (2012)

This video, prepared by the PEI Literacy Alliance, uses two scenarios to illustrate the importance of plain language and clear communication between doctors and senior citizens. In each case, actors play roles based on the kinds of situations that arise often in the medical system.

Sharing Our Gifts: Build skills together and create a family scrapbook – Facilitator's Guide (2012)

This guide has been developed to help community facilitators lead a two-hour workshop designed to encourage parents to create their own family literacy scrapbook. It includes the corresponding parent’s guide, with the addition of some information on facilitation at the front of each section. For example, there are tips for facilitating groups and suggestions for planning the workshop schedule.

Igniting the Power Within (2011)

Project Report 2009 – 2011

Igniting the Power Within (IPW) is a training model, developed by and for Aboriginal people in Manitoba, that uses storytelling as a teaching method to help adults identify and document their skills as they seek employment. The PEI Literacy Alliance wanted to see if this model would also benefit non-Aboriginals in the Atlantic Provinces and invited the IPW facilitation team to present their model at workshops in Prince Edward Island.

PEI Literacy Alliance Environmental Scan (2010)

In February 2010, the PEI Literacy Alliance hosted a roundtable discussion with Island professionals who are literacy and essential skills (LES) experts. Representatives from government, industry and educational institutions attended the meeting. The report, incorporating comments from those representatives, provides a look at the state of LES in the province.

2009 Summer Tutoring Program for Kids - Final Report (2009)

The Summer Tutoring Program for Kids (STPK) in Prince Edward Island has been running for eight weeks every summer since 1998. The program, which is offered free of charge, gives children with reading difficulties a chance to maintain their literacy skills over the summer months and provides relevant summer employment for qualified students. Students in Grade 1 through 6 are referred to the program by resource teachers in their schools.

2008 Summer Tutoring Program for Kids - Final Report (2008)

This is a report on the Summer Tutoring Program for Kids that runs during July and August every year in libraries, schools and community centres across P.E.I.
