Made in the North was a forum held in October 2012 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and organized collaboratively by the literacy councils of Canada’s three territories. The forum brought together 140 adult educators, employers, policy-makers, language experts, literacy practitioners, and Aboriginal and community leaders from the territories and from Labrador.
Designed for both adult educators and adult learners, this study guide offers learning activities to accompany the stories from the online tool “Essential Skills at Work in the North,” which can be found on the NWT Literacy Council’s website at http://www.nwt.literacy.ca.
This document focuses on the importance of oral language development and offers tips for parents to use to help their children develop language skills. The authors explain that children develop language over time and tell parents what to expect at each stage from infancy through the preschool years.
This document brings together the stories of 56 Aboriginal adult learners from three Adult Literacy and Basic Education (ALBE) programs sponsored by the NWT Literacy Council. They were interviewed as part of a study the council carried out in 2007-08 to explore non-academic outcomes for Aboriginal adult learners.
A guide for parents to support their children's healthy brain development
This booklet explains the connection between early childhood experiences, brain growth, and lifelong learning.
The authors explain that the brain grows more from birth to age three than at any other time in a person’s life. They describe how everyday things like cuddling, singing and talking to a baby stimulate brain development.
This study guide, aimed at both adult educators and adult learners, offers learning activities for the stories from the online tool “Essential Skills at Work in the North.”
This booklet is aimed at parents and caregivers who want to use talking, rhyming and singing to help children build strong language skills. The authors have included dozens of rhymes and songs, many with suggestions for actions to accompany them.
For a copy of a CD containing the songs, please contact the Council.
