OCC Skilled Workforce Policies (2012)

In this document, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) calls on the government of that province to take steps to ensure future productivity and to head off projected labour shortages.

The OCC points to the need for more flexible education and training programs to make learning and development opportunities available to all Ontario citizens throughout the course of their careers. In particular, Ontario would benefit from programs that target the Aboriginal and immigrant sectors of the population.

The authors also call on the government to invest in skilled trades by modernizing apprenticeship training; offer more support for workplace literacy and Essential Skills initiatives; and boost postsecondary education by allocating funds for infrastructure, basic and applied research, and financial aid for graduate students.
