Teaching Fractions, Percents and Decimals Together [Video - 9:28] (2010)

Featuring Linda Thorsen, Instructor, Valley Community Learning Association

This video features Linda Thorsen, an instructor with Nova Scotia’s Valley Community Learning Association, offering strategies for teaching fractions, decimals and percents to adult learners.

Students need to learn that in everyday life, a part of something can be shown in a number of different ways, she notes. For example, one-half is the same as .50 or 50 per cent. Play money can be used to show that a 10-dollar bill is one-half of $20, while a five-dollar bill is 50 per cent of $10, for instance.

Other suggestions include using a ruler and paper to illustrate how fractions can be expressed in a variety of ways.
