Using Essential Skills: On the Job with a Carpenter (2010)

The authors of this booklet follow a carpenter through a typical day to show how she uses Essential Skills in her work.

The carpenter begins her day using numeracy skills to check the measurements of an excavation to make sure it has reached the correct depth and is level. She uses reading skills to check specifications in the building code; document use to check a delivery slip; and critical thinking to set up her tools in the most efficient way.

The authors have included a section with questions that allow readers to assess how well their skills compare to those of an experienced carpenter.
