Rally for Literacy (2012)

In 2011, Lachlan MacLean of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories approached the NWT Literacy Council with a proposal for a fundraising project: a car rally that would take him around one-third of the world, from England to Mongolia. This how-to kit uses the Rally for Literacy as the basis for activities designed to strengthen Literacy and Essential Skills.

Activities include researching one of the countries along the rally route; using critical thinking skills to decide what to pack for the trip; planning meals using limited ingredients and minimal equipment; and writing a story based on photographs from the trip.

The author has also included a list of travel-themed books for young readers.

This document was published in time for NWT Literacy Week 2012, observed during the last week of September. The theme for 2012 is “Lifelong Learning: It’s a Trip!”
