What is PLATO?—Literacy Works, V1, No.2 (1990)

This article describes the Local PLATO Delivery System from The Roach Organization (TRO), an instructional local area network combining computer hardware and software to give instructors the tools to provide individualized instruction for students.

The author, an instructor at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST), explains that PLATO courseware is designed for students whose learning needs range from basic skills remediation to college level.

The article explains how the system works and includes information about two sites in Saskatchewan where PLATO-based projects were being carried out.

It also includes evaluation summaries from nine centres in Canada and the United States that were undertaking projects utilizing PLATO.
