Libraries – Fact Sheet (2012)

This fact sheet, part of a series developed by the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network (CLLN), looks at the role of libraries in building a literate society.

The authors point out that while libraries have long been a place of free access to the printed word, they now also function as a vital connection to knowledge in digital formats. Libraries provide positive reading experiences, based on the knowledge that reading for enjoyment is a powerful tool for literacy development.

They call on libraries to develop and deliver innovative services to all community members; provide special literacy materials in print, software, and audiovisual formats for learners, tutors, and instructors; and provide parent-child story times, homework clubs, reading groups, and other programs to encourage library use.
