Newcomers' Initiative - Final Report (2010)

Many Canadians face problems because of low literacy skills but the situation may be especially acute for newcomers to the country. The NWT Literacy Council launched the Newcomers’ Initiative as a way to strengthen networks by identifying literacy-related barriers for newcomers; encouraging organizations providing services to new Canadians to work together to enhance literacy and English language skills among the immigrant population; and improving access to the council’s resources.

This report summarizes the findings of the initiative, which included focus groups, a literature review, and interviews with individuals. The authors have included recommendations for action to be taken at both the government and non-government levels.
