Workforce – Fact Sheet (2012)

This fact sheet, part of a series developed by the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network (CLLN), examines the relationship between literacy and employment.

The authors point out that literacy skills dictate success in the workplace, with employees with higher literacy skills earning higher incomes. Those with higher literacy skills also report higher self-esteem; have fewer accidents on the job; receive more opportunities for further training; and have greater job mobility.

They suggest that workers, management, unions, community agencies, literacy organizations, and governments join forces to develop and deliver a variety of programs that meet the needs of employees with low literacy skills.
