Literacy and Essential Skills Tools: Making Them Work for You – Webinar on October 25, 2012 (2012)

Introducing LES Guide for Service Providers Assisting Homeless or At-risk Clients

The goal of the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS), developed by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), is to prevent and reduce homelessness by providing direct support and funding to communities across Canada. The HPS secretariat and the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES) at HRSDC have prepared a guide to Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) tools that can be used by service providers to assist their homeless or at-risk clients in accessing the labour market by improving their skills.

The webinar is available here as a PowerPoint presentation, with audio embedded in it. To listen to the audio content, download the PDF file, go to the link in the middle of the front page, and click to activate it. The duration is about an hour and 15 minutes.

A webinar was presented in October 2012 to introduce the LES guide to service providers. That webinar is available here as a PowerPoint presentation, with audio embedded in it. To listen to the audio content, open the PDF file, go to the link in the middle of the front page, and click to activate it.

The first part of the webinar features an official from OLES, who provides background on LES tools and resources; explains where to find the resources online, and how to order them; and discusses options for customizing the tools.

The second part of the webinar features a presentation by a manager with Youth LIVE, a job experience program that has been operating for more than 17 years in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She explains how incorporating Essential Skills training has helped participants, noting that of the 33 young people who took part in Youth Live in 2011, 24 were either employed or in school three months after completing the program.
