Literacy and Essential Skills Tools: Making Them Work for You (2012)

Webinar presented by Ashley Struthers, OLES - February 6, 2012

This resource includes an MP3 audio file and PDF file from a webinar, presented in February 2012 to raise awareness of tools available through the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES) at Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) to help address literacy and Essential Skills challenges in the workplace.

The presenter, a policy analyst with OLES, explains that the tools were developed in response to stakeholder consultations carried out in 2005. The consultations showed that while stakeholders understood the importance of Essential Skills (ES) to workplace success, they needed help to take action on skills gaps.

In response, the government produced more than 80 ES tools that could be used in the workplace. The tools can be used for gaining information and building awareness; for assessing ES needs; or for supporting skills development.

The webinar includes learning activities based on common situations. For instance, one scenario focuses on the needs of newcomers to Canada, while another uses the example of an older worker returning to the labour market after many years. Webinar participants were invited to select appropriate tools for use in each of those situations, and to explain why they chose those tools.

Participants also learned how to access the tools online, and how the tools can be customized to meet the needs of an individual or an organization.

To listen to the audio content, download the PDF file, go to the link in the middle of the front page, and click to activate it. The duration is about 42 minutes.
