Marcia Jeffers' speech during the award presentation by Literacy Nova Scotia's Adult Learners' Week Contest, March 2009 [Video - 2:59] (2009)

Since 2008, Literacy Nova Scotia (LNS) has celebrated International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) with a writing contest. The contest is open to participants in a series of writing workshops, along with learners from other adult learning, English as a Second Language (ESL), seniors’, and workplace programs.

Submissions to the contest are organized into four categories, with the winner from each category invited to present the winning entry at a reception in Halifax.

This video features the winner in the community college and adult high school category. She describes attending high school as a teenager, never feeling fully engaged by school, and deciding to drop out.

She spent the next 10 years regretting that decision. Finally, she made the decision to go back to school and enrolled at the Nova Scotia Community College. Now, she feels a new sense of purpose and confidence.
