Working with Newcomers: Tips for culturally-diverse Canadian organizations - Participant Workbook (2012)

This workbook is part of a set of three resources designed to reduce misunderstandings and workplace friction in culturally and linguistically diverse organizations. It is accompanied by a facilitator’s guide and a resource guide.

The four sections of the workbook deal with tips for working with newcomers; frequently asked questions, which explores the roots of culturally diverse behaviour at work; strategies for work teams; and tips for management teams.

Each section includes a variety of exercises to help participants reflect on both the similarities and the differences between themselves and recent immigrants, and to find paths to bridge the differences. For instance, participants are asked to list the ways that trust and rapport are developed in their specific workplace, then to figure out how those ways might be culturally defined.

The resources were prepared by Alberta Workforce Essential Skills (AWES), a nonprofit organization dedicated to building an adaptable and innovative workforce. For more information, visit the AWES website: http://www.awes.ca.
