Module 1: Introduction to Health Literacy (2010)

This presentation is part of a kit developed by Literacy Volunteers of Quebec (LVQ) to raise awareness among medical and social services practitioners of the link between literacy and health.

The authors explain the five levels of literacy; discuss the links between low literacy levels and poor health outcomes; and offer tips to help health professionals pick up on signs of low literacy.

Health professionals can help patients with low literacy levels by communicating clearly; using simple language and concrete examples; using pictures or models; confirming that patients understand by asking them to explain what they have heard; and being sensitive and respectful.

LVQ is a coalition of community-based volunteer groups that offer literacy services to Quebec's Anglophone population.
