Easy Does It! Plain Language and Clear Verbal Communication Training Manual (1998)

This manual was developed for health providers by the national literacy and health program of the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), which worked in partnership with 26 national health associations to raise awareness about the links between literacy and health. It offers information, tips, techniques and stories to help health-care workers improve the way they communicate with patients.

Clear verbal communication is a core clinical skill than a professional can develop, the authors note. Using clear verbal communication techniques and delivering health information in plain language is a way to improve the health care that is provided, and is particularly beneficial for patients with low literacy skills.

The manual is divided into eight units, dealing with literacy in Canada; literacy and health; clear verbal communication; the meaning of plain language; plain language health information; health environments; professional liability; and the implications of low literacy rates for professional education, direct service, and health policy.

Each unit includes an overview of the material; discussion of the topic; and quotes from adult learners. Most units feature a case study and discussion questions, and some offer practical exercises to apply what has been learned.
