Improving Apprentices' Success in Training and on the Job: Knowledge Sharing Webinar (2013)

The goal of this webinar, presented in March 2013 by the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES) of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), was to discuss innovative ideas for improving apprentices’ success in training and on the job. It was organized under the Essential Skills Integration into Apprenticeship Initiative, implemented by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA), and led jointly by federal, provincial, and territorial governments.

The webinar is available here as a PowerPoint presentation, with audio embedded in it. To listen to the audio content, download the PDF file, go to the link in the middle of the front page, and click to activate it. The audio lasts about 56 minutes.

There are three components to the webinar. In the first, an official of OLES offers an introduction to Essential Skills and provides an overview of the CCDA’s Essential Skills and Apprenticeship Initiative.

In the second part, an official of British Columbia’s Industry Training Authority (ITA) talks about its efforts to reduce barriers to participation in the industry training system, particularly for women, immigrants, and Aboriginal people.

The ITA developed an online tool consisting of a website, Essential Skills (ES) outlines, assessments, skills passports, and personalized learning plans. It provides learners with the ES requirements for the first two years of ITA technical training for 50 trades; allows learners to compare their skills to those required of various trades; provides learners with personalized learning plans; and allows learners to retest their skills and establish new goals.

In the third part of the webinar, an official of Nova Scotia’s apprenticeship training division outlines a pilot project begun in 2012 to integrate Essential Skills into apprenticeship. She describes how the project is creating training pathways for apprentices.
