Targeted Literacy Programming and Outreach for Young Single Males on Ontario Works (2013)

This curriculum is aimed at single men, aged 18 to 29, who are accessing Ontario Works assistance, and is designed to get them more involved in literacy programming.

The curriculum consists of four modules, focusing on determining the participant’s dream career; examining his online identity; analyzing how he communicates in different places; and choosing role models. Each module contains a learner workbook and a practitioner overview.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to develop curriculum for the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Program, which uses the Ontario Adult Curriculum Framework (OALCF). The practitioner overview includes an OALCF connection section, which includes the relevant indicators from the six competencies of the OALCF.

This section also designates activities as either beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Beginner is roughly equivalent to OALCF Level 1 or Essential Skills Level 1; intermediate is equivalent to OALCF Level 2 or Essential Skills Level 2; and advanced is generally equivalent to OALCF Level 3 or Essential Skills Level 3.

The majority of activities in each module fall into the beginner to intermediate range.

The authors explain that the modules have been specifically developed to meet the needs, interests, and expectations of the target group.

While the materials were developed for delivery in a small group setting, they can be modified for use in a one-on-one setting. Also, the curriculum can be used with clients other than the target group, as the topics included are current and are all connected to building employability skills.
