E-Learning for the Workplace: Creating Canada's Lifelong Learners - Centra Gas British Columbia (2001)

E-learning helps employees of Centra Gas BC Inc. maintain and update their skills and, at the same time, allows the company to be a leader in compliance and regulatory testing.

Centra Gas distributes natural gas to residential and commercial customers on Vancouver Island, and also supplies and distributes propane to the gas system in Whistler, British Columbia. Almost 250 employees work for Centra Gas in various locations throughout the region.

The Centra Gas workforce includes people with a wide range of skill sets, including engineering, finance and accounting, utility construction, gas measurement, sales, marketing, lands acquisition, materials management, customer care, human resources management, labour relations, safety, and information technology. Using an information technology (IT) network to deliver training has made it easier for employees to maintain their skills.

Initially, Centra Gas installed a group of five training modules onto its IT network. These were tested with "early adopters" before being launched company wide.

Over time, additional modules were added to the list of computer-based training (CBT) initiatives, including programs for safety compliance, environmental matters, and industry-specific skills training in such areas as information technology. Eventually, Centra Gas’s CBT system became accessible from the company’s intranet site, or from any computer with Internet access.

For Centra Gas, CBT ensures uniformity of training and accommodates varying work schedules.
