Case Study: Integrating Essential Skills for Success – FundyPros Specialty Construction (2011)

A New Brunswick construction company’s “School of Excellence” builds the leadership capacity of its supervisors by supporting them as they develop their essential skills.

FundyPros is the largest specialty construction firm in New Brunswick, carrying out both residential and commercial projects. Tradespeople were being promoted to supervisory roles in the company because they had the technical skills and talent to do the job, but they did not possess the necessary essential skills to be effective managers.

The company’s founder and president met that challenge by establishing a training program, and created a positive learning environment by engaging employees at all stages of the program’s development and implementation. The program helped each supervisor to develop a variety of essential skills required for their position, including writing and computer use. By including familiar workplace documents in the training, participants were able to see how what they were learning related to their tasks and responsibilities on the job.

While it has been a challenge to cover the costs of the program and to get employees on board, the company president feels the outcomes justify the investment. There have been many benefits to both employees and the company as a result of the on-the-job training program, including improved morale and increased productivity.
