Doing the maths: the training needs of numeracy tutors in Ireland, 2013 and beyond (2013)

This document outlines the findings of a study carried out by the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) and Institute of Technology, Tallaght (ITT) in Ireland to identify training needs among numeracy tutors working with adult learners in a number of settings.

More than 160 tutors completed a questionnaire for the study, which was carried out in 2012 and is based on a similar one undertaken in 2001.

The results showed that the real difference between the 2012 and 2001 survey data was the increase in the percentage of tutors who use technology as a teaching practice. That figure rose from 34 percent in 2001 to 60 percent in 2012.

More than 60 percent of respondents reported that they did not have enough training in teaching mathematics to adults, and 15 percent reported that they had no training at all. The majority of tutors expressed a need for a training program, and said that such should be accredited, delivered on a part-time basis, and supported by technology.

Based on the study’s findings, the authors recommend that NALA convene an expert group to address such issues as the further development of accredited numeracy training for adult tutors in Ireland; the need to agree upon the qualifications required by adult numeracy tutors; and the question of whether there a need for an agreed national definition of numeracy.

The authors point out that if a broad concept of numeracy is used to measure the numeracy skills and competence of Irish adults, then the provision of tutoring to adults should reflect that standard.
