Effective Marketing and Communications for Community Adult Learning Councils and Volunteer Tutor Adult Literacy (2008)

The goal of this manual is to help instructors, coordinators, and volunteers in Alberta’s adult literacy community make program promotion easier and more effective. It is based on information gathered through a provincial marketing survey, and addresses the need for a cohesive overall approach to increase participation of underrepresented learners.

The manual includes information on attracting more learners to programs; promoting the importance of literacy and lifelong learning; building awareness in the community; recruiting volunteers; cultivating a working relationship with the media; and raising a group’s profile with government, business, and other organizations that may be able to offer support.

The authors emphasize the need for consistent graphic elements and effective messaging, describing them as the two cornerstones of good communication.

While the document has been prepared specifically for the Alberta literacy community, the underlying principles it describes are applicable in a variety of settings.
