Silent Words: English 130 Novel Study (2012)

This guide has been designed to accompany the novel “Silent Words,” by Ruby Slipperjack. Set in northwestern Ontario in the 1960s, the novel tells the story of a young Ojibway boy and his journey of self-discovery.

The first section of the guide offers pre-reading activities that set the stage for reading the novel, including making predictions about what the book will be about and discussing the significance of the title.

The nine sections that follow each cover two or three chapters of the novel, and include a variety activities that focus on building vocabulary; developing and evaluating comprehension; and reflecting on the novel through entries in a journal. Each section has instructor notes, learner handouts, and an answer key.

The authors have also included links to other resources available on the Internet.
