Client Booklet: Reading – Level 1 (2013)

This booklet is part of a tool developed by HRSDC, now called Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), to help employment counsellors carry out informal Essential Skills needs assessments. It is designed for use by a client to assess skill in reading at Level 1 complexity.

The booklet begins with a discussion of reading skills, and instructions for doing the assessment.

The authors specify that the assessment is not a test. Rather, it is an opportunity for the client to identify reading skills strengths, and areas that may need improvement, in order to make decisions about job skills training and job searches.

Like the other materials in this tool, the booklet contains materials based on real-life work situations. For example, one section contains questions about a note from the manager of a bakery, explaining to the cashier that the prices of various items are going up.
