Career Development Manual – Instructional Resource (2012)

This document is part of “Career – Life – Work,” a series of four instructor’s manuals and six workbooks, produced by the NWT Literacy Council.

This section of the series provides learners with an opportunity to reflect on their skills and abilities; develop a career plan; research career options; and search for employment.

Specific topics covered attitude, including the power of positive thinking; personal skills and attributes; the steps in developing a career plan, including the distinction between a job and a career; job search skills, including networking and Internet searches; and getting the job, including preparing a resumé or portfolio, filling out application forms, and writing cover letters.

The manual contains a variety of activities for instructors to choose from, along with handouts for learners.

There are also two workbooks that go with this section, entitled “Planning Your Career” and “Getting the Job.” The workbooks can be used with this section or as stand-alone units.
