Keyano College's Mine Operations Program: Helping the next generation of mine operators to contribute in a broader way and prepare themselves for progression in their respective companies (1999)

Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alberta, has partnered with Suncor Energy and Syncrude Canada to develop a new mine operations program that emphasizes the enhancement of students’ employability skills.

The 28-week program includes at least six weeks devoted to developing employability skills. The underlying strategy is to provide training that will enhance individual growth, and meet the oil-sands industry’s need for a new generation of mine operators able to contribute in a broader way and to progress within the company.

The program serves potential mine operators; the oil-sands industry as a whole; and the local community.

Its objectives include enhancing participants’ academic, personal management, and teamwork skills; introducing industry-related terminology and improving communications skills; enhancing workers’ capacity for lifelong learning so they can take advantage of further technical training and opportunities for promotion; promoting the virtues of adaptability; and helping participants learn about nutrition, managing stress, safety, and other factors that contribute to wellness.

Fort McMurray is home to the world’s largest deposits of oil sands, a type of petroleum deposit.
