Understanding Creative Commons: Webinar on June 4, 2013 - presented by Monika Jankowska-Pacyna (2013)

Creative Commons is a non-profit organization and a movement devoted to expanding the range of works available to share legally, and offering alternatives to "all rights reserved" copyright. Creative Commons has developed copyright licences that allow creators to specify which rights they reserve and which rights they waive with regard to the use of their work.

In June 2013, the AlphaPlus organization presented a webinar to help participants explore Creative Commons (CC) licences and learn how to use them properly when teaching, administering, or developing content. The presentation is available here as a PDF file.

The webinar leader explains that Creative Commons offers six types of licences that correspond with a range of objectives for creators, from allowing maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials, to imposing the most restrictive conditions.

For instance, the “Attribution CC BY” licence lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon the creator’s work, even commercially, as long as credit is given for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of the licences offered.

At the other end of the scale is the “Attribution – NonCommercial – NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND” licence, which only allows others to download works and share them with others as long as they credit the creator, but not to change them in any way or to use them commercially.

The author explains how to use the Creative Commons website to find material to meet the user’s purposes, and notes that material licensed through Creative Commons can be found on many other sites, like the photo-sharing service Flickr.

AlphaPlus, a provincially-funded Ontario organization that provides expertise to support adult educators, uses Creative Commons licences. The author notes that the organization wants the material it produces to reach a wide audience, and uses the licences to help people know how to repurpose and share that material. Page couverture
