Digital Technology Snapshot of the Literacy and Essential Skills Field 2013 (2013)

Summary Report

Based on a project undertaken by the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network (CLLN), this report offers a look at how digital technology tools are being used in the Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) field.

The research phase of the project, conducted from January to March 2013, included interviews and online questionnaire aimed at both support agencies and frontline delivery agencies. All 13 provincial and territorial coalitions participated, together with two networks, staff from 14 frontline delivery programs, and one government department.

Questions focused on the types of technology and tools being used; how they are being used; how LES staff would like to use such tools in the future; and barriers to the full integration of digital technology. Digital technology was defined as the broad range of tools like computers, SmartBoards, tablets, cellphones, smart phones, and other mobile devices, as well as the software, applications, and websites that are used with these tools, both online and offline.

The researchers found that all interviewees use digital technology for administration, communications, and networking, although they are using many different programs and platforms. Digital technology is commonly used to deliver professional development for staff, with webinars the most popular option.

Connectivity is still a problem in remote areas, where lack of broadband availability makes it very difficult to stream videos.

Mobile technology has become a key resource for LES organizations where staff members are regularly out of the office. Smart phones and tablet computers allow staff to access email and documents while working from a variety of locations.
