Building Essential Skills in the Workplace: Producing “Productivity through People” at Minas Basin Pulp & Power Company Limited (2005)

Minas Basin Pulp & Power’s Workplace Education Program (WEP) is helping the company meet the challenges of new technology and a changing economy.

Founded in 1927 in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, Minas Basin Pulp & Power produces a variety of paperboard products.

When the company was first established, most entry-level jobs in production did not require a minimum level of formal education. When the mill added its new linerboard machine in 1996, it had to more than double its workforce, and most employees who came on board at that time had at least a Grade 10, if not a Grade 12, education.

The company realized that in order to grow and compete in the market, it had to raise the standard education level and improve the basic literacy and work skills of its employees. This became the objective of the company’s WEP. Once employees’ essential skills had improved, then the company could move on to provide technical training on new equipment.

The company partnered with the Nova Scotia Department of Education to set up the program. A field officer, paid by the department, conducted an organizational needs assessment and identified key areas that needed attention.

Minas Basin Pulp & Power worked with the field officer to develop five workplace education programs, including Essential Skills for General Education Development (GED) preparation; document literacy; basic upgrading for the workplace; using computers; and a basic math refresher course.
