Citizenship Resource: A classroom resource for teaching citizenship topics to adult English language learners – Canadian Language Benchmarks 1-8 (2011)

This resource has been designed for instructors teaching concepts of Canadian citizenship in an adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. It is intended for use at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) levels 1 through 8.

The document contains seven chapters dealing with such topics as the rights and responsibilities of citizenship; Canadian identity; Canada’s history; Canada’s government; elections; Canadian symbols; and Canada’s regions and economy.

Each chapter contains a planning framework that provides ideas for developing lessons using features of CLB-based and content-based instruction, and a section offering sample activities, instructional tools, audio material, and related instructor notes.

The authors note that the resource offers instructors flexibility, allowing them to use sections or pages in the order they find most useful.
