Effective Journeyperson Apprentice Mentoring On-the-Job: Tips, Strategies, and Resources (2013)

This report highlights six workplace practices that support journeyperson trainers and, ultimately, enhance apprentice training experiences. It is based on more than 80 interviews with employers, journeypersons, apprentices and trainers, with additional input from the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum’s working group.

Those practices include selecting the appropriate person to be the mentor; offering mentoring training; creating a training plan; giving the journeyperson and apprentice opportunities to evaluate how things are going; providing the journeypersons with ideas for effective mentoring and communication; and providing ongoing supports, including refresher courses.

Those interviewed for the report pointed to a number of characteristics that good mentors need, including a desire to play a role in training the future workforce; a willingness to support apprentices, despite the time pressures at the workplace; an openness to working with the younger generation; a track record for safety; a strong work ethic and skill; and the ability to transfer knowledge.

The report’s authors also include a number of recommendations, including educating employers and journeypersons about the value of apprenticeship; talking to employers about the business case for training; sharing information about existing mentoring resources; supporting full-time coordinator positions; and incorporating mentoring concepts into training standards.
