Improving family literacy, one father at a time: Implementation report for two family literacy programs designed to encourage fathers' involvement in the literacy of their family (2013)

This document is housed on the server of the Coalition ontarienne de formation des adultes (COFA).

This report outlines a project carried out between 2009 and 2013 to learn about the conditions needed to increase the participation of fathers in a family literacy program. The term “father” is used broadly and includes any man who plays a significant role in the life of a child, such as a stepfather, a grandfather, an uncle, a neighbour, or a family friend.

The first phase of the project consisted of research on the intervention strategies in family literacy that target fathers, and that can be applied to the minority Francophone context in Canada and, more specifically, in Ontario.

In the second phase, the research team began to develop two family literacy programs focusing specifically on the needs of fathers. One of the programs is designed for parents of preschoolers, aged three to five years, while the other is intended for parents of children aged six to eight years. The programs were tested by five collaborating organizations from Ontario, Nova Scotia, and the Yukon.

The authors note that recruitment is a challenge for any family literacy program, and this challenge is accentuated when it comes to programs that target fathers. In addition, this project targeted fathers from Francophone communities living in a minority setting. These communities are small, and often there are few families who are eligible to form a group.

The satisfaction level of parents in the two programs was high. Everyone felt their participation had a positive impact on their family, both because they were doing more activities with their children and because their children were improving their French vocabulary.
