Enhancing Our Knowledge: An Occupational Profile – Labour Market Study of LES Workers in Canada [Video – 58:09] (2013)

Project Results Webinar, Nov. 13, 2013 – presented by Anne Ramsay

This document is housed on the Adobe Connect server.

This webinar provides the results of a project undertaken by the Canadian Literacy and Learning Network (CLLN) to get a picture of Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) practitioners working with adults across Canada.

The project involved a survey of paid LES workers, including instructors, coordinators, assessors, program managers, supervisors, and administrators. As well, researchers collected data through key informant interviews and focus groups with 58 Anglophone, Francophone, and Aboriginal LES workers and carried out supplementary research on LES hiring practices and requirements within Canada and on LES labour market studies in other jurisdictions.

Presented on November 13, 2013, the webinar features Anne Ramsay, project manager for the labour market study.

The results of the study show that the LES workforce is a strong and resilient group, she notes. At the same time, there are concerns that should be addressed. For instance, many LES workers expect to leave the profession fairly soon, either because of burnout or retirement. It is important that succession strategies are in place to fill those jobs.

Other recommendations include investigating possible certification for LES workers; improving access to professional development; and coming up with human resources strategies that promote consistency in the working environment.
