Activity Book: 15 minutes of fun for Family Literacy Day (2014)

Family Literacy Day is observed in Canada every year on January 27 as a way to raise awareness of the importance of reading and taking part in other literacy-related activities as a family.

This booklet contains a number of fun learning activities for parents and children to do together. There is a map of Canada for colouring; instructions for developing a story based on pictures and partial sentences provided; a math sheet that uses pictures of Canadian currency; and an introduction to the classic card game Snap.

The authors have also included directions for making a drum out of a can, and a recipe for quesadillas.

The activities can be modified to suit different age levels. For instance, older children may be able to do some of the chopping of ingredients for the recipe. Depending on the age and interest level of the children, the making of the drum could be a starting point for learning about Aboriginal drumming.
