Ways to Nurture Reading (2013)

This fact sheet offers 30 suggestions for building interest in reading. While the document focuses on nurturing reading in First Nations communities, the ideas would be valuable in any setting.

The suggestions include giving away a book on birthdays and celebrations; providing a series of books that builds a reading chain; setting up a “Reading Role Models” or “Reading Ambassadors” campaign with elders, parents, and elected community leaders; and expanding the network of those who contribute books.

As well, the author suggests sourcing e-book subscriptions; starting a digital library; and acquiring e-readers.
