CLB Support Kit – Section 1 Part I, II and III (2012)

In 2010, the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), a descriptive scale of ability in English as a Second Language (ESL), was revised to make it clearer and more usable.

This document is the first part of a kit that provides background information for in-service training on the revised CLB for instructors working in programs funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

It includes an orientation to the revised CLB; in-depth discussions on incorporating grammar, pronunciation, and other practical matters into CLB-based programs; sections on using the CLB in specific contexts, including multilevel classes, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), language training for the workplace, and classes with learners who have special needs; and sample tools for program planning and assessment that can be adapted for individual use.

For each topic, there are discussions of the underlying principles being taught; sample tools for incorporating those principles; and lists of suggested resources.

The kit also includes two other documents, which deal with the specific skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. For example, "Exemplars for the Receptive Skills" is found in Section 2 Part IV at:
