CLB Support Kit – Section 2 Part IV – Exemplars for the Receptive Skills (2012)

This document is part of a kit developed to support in-service training on the revised Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for instructors working in programs funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The CLB, a descriptive scale of ability in English as a Second Language (ESL), was revised in 2010.

The theme of this document is exemplars for the skills of listening and reading.

The authors explain that exemplars depict what ESL learners are able to comprehend at each benchmark, from 1 to 12, and show the different ways in which the characteristics of a benchmark can be manifested. For the skill of listening, exemplars are video and audio clips of native speakers of English, while the exemplars for the skill of reading are printed texts and documents of different genres, formats, lengths, and complexities.

The exemplars correspond to the levels of complexity found in the CLB. For instance, a reading exemplar at level 1 is a simple grocery list, while the exemplars for higher levels involve analyzing essays or reading complicated instruction manuals.
