CLB Support Kit – Section 3 Part IV – Exemplars for the Productive Skills (2012)

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is a 12-level descriptive scale of ability in English as a Second Language (ESL). The CLB was revised in 2010 to make it clearer and more usable.
This document is the third part of a kit supporting in-service training on the revised CLB for instructors who work in programs funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. It provides exemplars for the language skills of speaking and writing.
A DVD that accompanies the kit provides 12 primary speaking exemplars, along with 10 secondary speaking samples. The complete CLB Support Kit is available by ordering through CCLB at this address: http://www.language.ca/index.cfm?Voir=sections&Id=18437&M=4038&Repertoire_No=2137991327.
There are 12 writing exemplars in this document, based on the kind of tasks required in everyday life, from making a list to applying for a job. The authors have also provided seven secondary writing samples for extra practice.
Exemplars depict what ESL learners are able to do at each language level from 1 to 12, and bring to life the descriptors found on the pages of the CLB.
