National Occupational Standards: Introduction – Benefits and Uses (2011)

This document offers an introduction to National Occupation Standards (NOS), which describe the standard knowledge, skill, and performance required to be considered competent in a particular occupation.

These standards apply to all employees in an occupation, regardless of their work setting or company size, and are compiled in collaboration with occupational and industry experts, the authors explain.

They allow employees to get a good understanding of what they need to know for their job, and what they need to do on the job.

Employers and managers can use the standards as guides for hiring practices; for developing training programs; and to meet the standards of a profession.
