Deanna Richard, Winner of a scholarship "Je ne lâche pas, je gagne !" [Video - 4:25] (2013)

This video features a 55-year-old Quebec woman who has recently completed high school and is now looking forward to studying at Montreal’s Concordia University.

She enrolled at the Huntingdon Adult Education and Community Centre, southwest of Montreal, at the same time one of her eight children was completing his secondary studies there.

She explains that as her children became older, she found herself with both a little more free time and an intense desire to learn. Going back to school took courage, but it also increased her confidence.

Now she wants to become a teacher. She points out that she will be 59 when she completes her university program, considerably older than most novice teachers. But she has realized that she would much rather be an older teacher than a 59-year-old wishing that she had followed her dreams.

The Fondation pour l’alphabétisation du Québec awarded her a $1,000 bursary for her hard work and perseverance as an adult learner.
