Building on Investment: The Power in Partnerships (2013)

Sector Council Case Study

The Building on Investment (BOI) project used partnerships to enhance the English skills of recent immigrants working in the construction industry in Alberta.

Alberta Workforce Essential Skills (AWES) partnered with the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) and Alberta Employment and Immigration (AEI) to adapt an English-language safety model developed originally for the manufacturing sector. That involved customizing a program of safety training for non-native speakers, using highly visual representations of safety issues and plain language scripted teaching notes.

As well, the program included a train-the-trainer package for supervisors.

Trainers, leads and supervisors from construction companies located around Alberta answered a questionnaire on specific training needs, giving AWES insight into how to structure training delivery and how to ensure that the content was specific to the construction sector.

AWES then signed a partnership agreement with the Construction Sector Council (CSC) to share assets and knowledge. The CSC provided the BOI project with poster images, acted as a content reviewer, and disseminated the BOI resources nationwide through their online training program.
