Changing immigrants' attitudes toward intentions to use the BC HealthGuide Program: Culturally specific video messaging for health promotion (2007)

Journal of Applied Research on Learning, Vol. 1, No. 1, Article 3, 2007

This study investigated perceptions within the Iranian community of the Greater Vancouver Area about the Government of British Columbia’s health information program, and explored a model for introducing the program to other ethnic communities in the province.

Introduced in 2001, the BC HealthGuide (BCHG) program includes a handbook, a toll-free telephone service staffed by specially trained registered nurses, a health information website, and fact sheets. This program is designed to improve consumer access to health information and advice; expand consumer awareness of ways to manage personal health risks; alleviate pressure on emergency and physician services; and reduce costs due to inappropriate use of the system.

However, use of the BCHG program was lower than desired among certain populations, including Aboriginal people, minority groups, and newcomers. This collaborative research and intervention process was aimed at increasing the awareness and use of these services in the Iranian community through exposure to culturally relevant Farsi-language videos, and at identifying strategies that could be used with other groups.

Eight hundred people participated in a telephone survey, followed by nine focus group sessions. There were low awareness and utilization rates at the beginning of the study. Following screening of the promotional videos, awareness and utilization rates improved substantially, and those improved rates were maintained at the follow-up focus group stage.
