Workplace Basic Skills: A Teacher's Guide for Community-based Literacy Programs (1995)

This guide has been designed to help community-based literacy instructors plan, select, and teach materials that their students will have to use in the workplace.

The guide is divided into five units, focusing on understanding the management structure of the workplace; becoming familiar with the vocabulary required on various forms; practising communication skills; learning about the symbols and vocabulary used for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS); and knowing what to expect when dealing with such documents as employee handbooks.

As well, the guide contains information and advice about teaching adults; dealing with learning disabilities; recognizing different learning styles; and using teaching strategies that are effective in an adult classroom.

The author encourages instructors to adapt the information in the guide to meet the needs of their programs and their students.
