Part of Everything We Do (2005)

Integrating literacy into the Canadian labour movement

"Part of Everything We Do" is an article that appears in the fall 2005 issue of the journal Literacies. In this article the author, Tamara Levine, writes about the changing relationship between unions and literacy work. She explains how unions are moving away from a project-based, grant-dependent approach in which literacy is appended to the regular work of the union to one that emphasizes how literacy and clear language can be part of everything the union does.

In exploring this shift, the author discusses the history of literacy as a union issue; the structure and funding of union-based literacy programs; the integration of literacy into union structures, policies and priorities; the role of the Canadian Labour of Congress in literacy; as well as challenges and resistance to the literacy integration concept.
