Not Too Long Ago (1999)

Seniors Tell Their Stories

This document includes more than sixty stories from seniors living in all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador. Collected primarily through taped interviews, the stories have been edited as little as possible in order to retain the individual voice of each contributor.
Some of the stories are personal reminiscences, like one man’s account of life as a coal miner or an Englishwoman’s experiences as an outport nurse. Others refer to historical events, like the tsunami that struck Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula in 1929.
The collection is aimed at seniors who are trying to improve their literacy skills.
