Opening up the possibilities (2010)

This magazine celebrates 2010 International Adult Learners’ Week (ILAW) in Canada, showcasing the contributions lifelong learning makes to individuals, communities and the world.
It includes articles focusing on the boom in apprenticeship programs in Nova Scotia; workplace literacy as a key to economic growth; the formation of the grassroots Pathways to Education organization in a Toronto public-housing project; and the need for adult education to be relevant to people’s everyday lives.
Other articles include a question-and-answer feature on Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR); an account of the sixth International Conference on Adult Education, held in Brazil in December 2009; a feature on the bond between a group of adult learners in Toronto and their counterparts in Kenya; and a discussion of the unique challenges of adult education in Canada’s Far North.
The issue also includes links to a variety of online resources.
