Rent Increases (2009)

Canadian Language Benchmark 5+

This document is housed on the Community Legal Education of Ontario (CLEO) server.

This English as a Second Language (ESL) activity kit, aimed at newcomers to Ontario, outlines some of the legal rights and responsibilities in the landlord-tenant relationship in that province. Students are expected to understand what guideline and above-guideline increases are; learn about legal and illegal deposits and charges, and the importance of getting receipts; and know what to do if a landlord breaks a rent increase rule.

Language outcomes include showing comprehension of a one-page excerpt from a booklet and taking notes from an oral presentation or a page of written information.
