A Worker and Trade Union Perspective on Labour Market Information (2009)

Report Prepared for the Advisory Panel to the Forum of Labour Market Ministers

This report was prepared in 2009 for the advisory panel to the Forum of Labour Market Ministers (FLMM) on Labour Market Information (LMI). FLMM is made up of the federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for labour market policy and programming.

The author drew on studies prepared for the advisory panel; interviews with trade union representatives who use LMI; and users in not-for-profit organizations that provide job search assistance.

The author presents a brief analysis of the need for LMI in the context of a changing labour market; provides a summary of the concerns expressed about LMI in Canada; and looks at the roles of workers and trade unionists as consumers of LMI. He concludes with suggestions for making LMI more effective and relevant.
