Making sense of social capital theory through the lens of adult learning (2011)

The term “social capital” is open to many definitions but essentially refers to the positive effects social networks can have on the productivity and quality of life of both individuals and groups.
In this discussion paper, the authors present three perspectives on the relationship between social capital and adult learning. First, they look at early concepts of social capital theory. Then they move on to the second perspective, which involves outlining the co-evolution of human capital and social capital, and noting areas where further research is needed. The third perspective involves discussing a more focused target population: adult literacy learners.
The authors have included an extensive bibliography of materials on social capital, adult literacy, and adult learning.
